‘Rescue me? You were the one who put me here in the first place!’

Anne backed off as Mondegreene stood carefully in the doorway, her stub of a knife poised and ready to do absolutely no damage whatsoever. Who was she kidding? This thing wouldn’t cut butter, but it worked as a psychological crutch. She only wished she’d thought to pick up the knitting needle, which at least looked the part.

‘Ah,’ said Mondegreene slowly, as if confirming some long-held suspicion. ‘I see. Not only has that blackguard Schädengeist locked you in here and forced you to into a gauntlet of his own devilish design, he’s somehow managed to brainwash you too. I thought I’d destroyed the Gehirnschmelzer device back in Peenemünde, but obviously the swine’s gone and built himself another one. All very troubling stuff, old girl, and I don’t doubt I’ll have to vex and vanquish evil before the day is done, but it’s hardly our most troubling concern. The, ah… poison gas?’ he said, politely pointing at the bulbous green canister.

‘I’ve got absolutely no reason to trust you,’ said Anne coldly.

‘Yes, but I could hardly leave you in here to pop your clogs now, could I? Look, I’ll explain everything later. Not to put too fine a point on it, but at present you haven’t got a particularly broad range of options.’

He was right, but Anne begrudged letting him know it. ‘All right,’ she said. ‘But keep your hands where I can see them.’ She cast a glance down to the timer.

36, 35, 34…

She looked back across to Mondegreene and jabbed her stub of weapon at him. He put up his hands and stepped backwards to retreat into the next room, but he’d been trying to smile reassuringly at Anne and wasn’t paying full attention to where he was going. His heel caught on the lip of the door and he tumbled backwards onto his behind, his arms flailing wildly as he fell. The impact must have activated some hidden switch as the door began to close, sliding out from her left. Before she could make a break for the closing gap Mondegreene was on his feet. He leaped forwards to jam himself in the door frame, fighting the mechanism back with outstretched arms.

‘Come on!’ he yelled. ‘We’ve only got seconds!’

Anne knew exactly how much time they had – she’d been mentally counting down from the moment the numbers had started ticking.

18, 17, 16…

She ducked under Mondegreene’s arms, his elbows just caving from the effort as she fell shoulder-first into the sand. Mondegreene stepped out and politely allowed the door to close, patting down his jacket before offering a hand to help her up. She shook her head irritably, motioning that she was perfectly capable of getting to her feet on her own. In her head the timer had just reached 0, and she couldn’t be sure if it was then replaced by the sound of hissing from the previous room. Perhaps it was all in her head – it was hard to tell down here.
